Being D.A.D.

Becoming a father is one of the greatest honors a man can experience. Yet, it comes with no manual or set of instructions for navigating its complexities. One significant challenge that many fathers face, particularly those involved in their child's life before the age of 16, is managing a child’s custody and preparing for its demands.

Even before I had memories, my dad was a part of my life, and that never changed. One remarkable thing about my father is that he recorded anything and everything before I could talk or walk. From singing to me to staring at raccoons through our backyard door, he was creating memories for me before I could ever do so for myself. I will forever be grateful for that.

Growing up, I had to learn some things the hard way when it came to my mental health. Battling depression was difficult, and there were times in my life when I didn’t know how to ask for help because I didn't understand exactly what I needed. At times, I would avoid everything and everyone, but my dad was always there for me, pulling me out of the hole I thought was impossible to escape.

Time and time again, my dad has been my rock. When I think about the man I want to become as a father, I aspire to emulate the best dad in the world so that one day, my son will write something like this about me. Jokes aside, there are not enough thank-yous I could give to my dad for the love and time he has given me. I just want to make him proud.

Darien was six months old. After the airports reopened following the terrorist attacks on our country, we decided to visit Washington, D.C. to see the aftermath of the plane crashing into the Pentagon. This is a picture of Darien and me standing in front of a board filled with prayers and condolences to the families. I wanted my son to be part of this historical moment.
Father's Day
Although I never had a father in my life, I wanted to make sure my son knew how much of an honor and privilege it was to be his dad. This picture captures a Father's Day moment where Darien (Doc) made a tie for me.
First day of school
Reflecting on Darien's first day of school still gives me chills. This moment was a milestone in our journey.
College Graduate
Sharing the experience of being the first member of my family to graduate from college was important. This is Darien sitting on the University of Maryland mascot, Testudo.
Football Moments
The beginning of many Darien and Dad moments on the football field. It was an honor to coach him in all his sports.
Meeting an NFL Star
Making a dream come true, I surprised Darien with an opportunity to meet and spend time with his favorite NFL running back from the Seattle Seahawks. That day was unforgettable.
Times of Adversity
Being there as both dad and coach during times of adversity was crucial in our journey.

Best Man and Best Friend
Darien decided to play college football for the University of Nebraska. In line with our agreement from his middle school days, I moved to Nebraska to watch him play. It's all about honoring your word!

A Message to Fathers

Being a dad has been an incredible journey filled with challenges and rewards that bring joy beyond words. This is the message I want to leave for all fathers:

There comes a time in our lives when, as men, we are blessed with a bundle of joy. We may find out early or wait to see if it’s a girl or a boy. From the moment they are brought into this world, our lives begin to change. We feel immense love and a sense of pride that should remain unchanged to this day.

So step up, men, and continue to be the example that doesn’t come and go like a fad. Remember, any man can be a father, but God has given you the blessing and responsibility to be a D.A.D.

Welcome to the D.A.D. Program. Join us in celebrating the incredible journey of fatherhood.
